Welcome to our everyday people blog series!
The Witching Hour took to Instagram to ask people about their views on feminism and current anxieties tailored around women's rights as part of the 'everyday' blog series.
Part one discusses a soon-to-be graduate, Claudette Gilhespie, who will be stepping foot in the business industry. Originally from Newcastle upon Tyne, Claudette moved to New Orleans with a Tennis scholarship to study finance. An exciting new journey that presents a great deal of intimidation for the male-dominated world she is about to embark on. Claudette discusses her fears.

"When I graduate and go out into the business world, I know even to this day inequality still exists."
Feminism is such a broad term to describe the inequality between Males and Females. If I had to describe what I think of the word feminism I would describe it as a powerful, memorable word that reminds women of our worth, how far we have come and what we have achieved together to get from the position we were many years ago to the position we are currently in. Women got brought up with almost a chosen life path of cooking and cleaning, not being allowed to do certain sports, not being allowed to wear certain things or to vote and express what they believe in. This could have been our life today if it wasn’t for people such as, Emmeline Pankhurst, a woman who did not accept women getting brought up into being inferior to men and who fought her whole life in dedication on making women’s life with freedom and choice to do anything men can do.
In my opinion I think that every woman should be somewhat knowledgeable of the history and the important feminists that have passed laws enabling us to live a life different to the one they lived. I am a sporty person who has played sport my whole life with a newfound passion for business. This is why feminism means so much to me because when I graduate and go out into the business world, I know even to this day inequality still exists. It is a very male dominated field that can be pretty intimidating for women entering the field. I feel I am going into an industry having a psychological feeling I am at a disadvantage to have the same opportunities to become as successful as a man entering the same field.
Overall, I think Feminism can sometimes be misperceived or misconceptualised in the case where woman want to reap the benefits of Feminism presents us with yet complain when Feminism gives us negative changes. However, besides from this misconception, I would consider myself a feminist and I think we have come such a long way and it is important to keep making sure we get that bit closer to the equality we deserve.
