Hello, nice to meet you.
My name is Heidi, I’m 22 years old. I come from Kent.
After scrolling through Instagram and (yet again) feeling rather frustrated at the false presumptions and misleading information I wanted to rant. You probably think it’s easier to head to the comment section and start a war, but the problem is the comment section is full of trolls and for one of a better word, idiots.
I’ve seen a few posts on here that have made me feel comfortable with finding my voice on an online platform (Guilty feminist 101 gave me a push to speak up!) I am a feminist and trans activist, but often I feel like I don’t do enough.
Well, here’s the first step.
I’ve came on today to inform you of 5 myths you’ve probably heard about trans people;
1. Trans people have to pass as cis to be valid.
Trans people do not have to do anything to be valid, let’s get that one straight.
2. Being trans is a mental illness.
I’m sorry what? Trans people are fully aware of what they need with regards to gender. Affirming healthcare.
3. “Trans children are medically transitioning which is dangerous as they might regret it!”
No children are medically transitioning. This is not happening. Transition rates are low with less than 1% in international studies.
4. There are only 2 genders and therefore only 2 types of people.
Gender is a spectrum! There are infinite ways to experience gender. Everyone has their own unique experiences.
Non- binary trans people exist!
5. Transgender people are a threat to cis people.
comical. Transgender people are often targeted by cis people. More than 4 in 5 young trans people have experienced name calling or verbal abuse.
Transpeople are human beings who deserve support and respect.
This post was essential and I already feel better, I must confess. The constant misinformation on trans people can be so hurtful and is often aimed at spreading hate.
Let’s turn that on its head and support each other instead!
Rant over, who’s next???
Such an informative post! Thank you for teaching me a thing or two💛
